Professor Scott Showalter addresses the fast-moving changes in Accounting Today

Over the past 30 years, there has been a multitude of technological breakthroughs and behavioral changes that shaped the current accounting field. Computers, Quicken-type software, and the treatment of staff as clients are just a few of the changes that incite fear and anxiety in some about the future of accounting, as well as provide hope to many for the bright future of the field. “If the profession gets this right, we will also attract a broader array of students,” said Scott Showalter, professor of practice and director of the Jenkins Master of Accounting program at NC State’s Poole College of Management, when addressing the potential outcomes of the changes. “Because many traditional clerical tasks will be subsumed by technology, professionals will provide more critical thinking and judgment about the information produced.
