Professor Robin Pennington On Why Companies Should Be More Open About Security Breaches

Robin Pennington, an associate professor of accounting in the Poole College of Management, released her research on the negative impacts of cybersecurity breaches. In this research, it states that companies can benefit from sharing cybersecurity techniques and learn from security breaches. By sharing this crucial information, companies can prevent becoming less attractive to investors through breaches. “We not only confirmed the contagion effect, but found that there are clear steps companies can take to reduce its impact,” said Pennington. “Specifically, companies would be well advised to implement the voluntary reporting guidelines from the AICPA on disclosing cybersecurity efforts.” Read more on Futurity.
