Message from the Dean: 2021 Latinx Heritage Month

Dear Poole Community,

This week of September starts our campus and college celebrations of Latinx Heritage month. The return to campus has been an adjustment for all of us, and we are excited about the opportunities to once again come together to center Latinx and Hispanic-identifying students, faculty and staff.

This year NC State and Poole College will focus on the theme, Hacia adelante, which translates to “moving forward”. Between record turnout of Latinx¹ voters to the recent release of the 2020 Census documenting significant growth of Latinx and Hispanic population nationwide², Latinx and Hispanic communities across the nation are imagining their futures post-pandemic.

“Moving forward” invites us as a community to better understand the dynamics of the expanding Latinx and Hispanic community. Below are some great ways to engage with our Latinx community on campus:

  • Visit the Libraries dynamic timelines.
  • Reach out to alumni in the Latinx Alumni Network (founded by our very own Lyndenise Berdecia, BSBA class of ’06) to be guest speakers and content experts in a class or student organization event.
  • Join the Latinx Heritage Month Mural Reveal in the East Plaza of Nelson Hall to hear from the artist as he shares his inspiration and interpretation of the 2021 mural inspired by the classic game of Loteria.
  • Join in any of the other campus events for Latinx Heritage Month that can be found here.

I hope you will consider engaging in an opportunity this month to learn more about our Latinx community.

Best,
