From the Halls of Nelson to the Graduation Stage: Meet Poole’s Student Commencement Speaker Landon Hong
Business administration major Landon Hong will deliver remarks to his fellow graduates at Poole's ceremony on Saturday, May 3.

For graduating senior Landon Hong, stepping onto the stage at this spring’s commencement ceremony is more than just an honor — it’s a full-circle moment.
“My time at Poole College has been full of great memories and relationships,” Hong shares. “Nelson Hall feels like home. The support from students, staff and faculty is something I’ll never forget”
That sense of community, along with a drive to push himself beyond his comfort zone, inspired Hong to apply for the role of commencement speaker. His speech, which he’s currently refining with help from a speech coach, friends and family, centers around personal growth.
“The main message is that it takes being uncomfortable in order to grow and accomplish extraordinary things,” Hong said. “So I wanted to literally practice what I’m preaching. This is a way for me to do that — and also give a meaningful gift to my grandparents, who will be in the audience.”
Hong’s speech preparation has also involved deep reflection on the values that have shaped his college experience. Throughout his time at Poole, he found inspiration from those closest to him, starting with his parents.
“My dad taught me how to be a strong professional and a leader, and my mom taught me how to be selfless and someone people want to be around,” he shared.

He also credits mentors within Poole, including Tedd Szeto, assistant dean for undergraduate programs, Brian Clark, executive director of philanthropy, and Patrice Nealon, senior lecturer in marketing, for empowering him and reminding him not to take everything too seriously.
As graduation approaches, Hong admits there’s a lot he’ll miss, especially the “little moments,” like chats with professors after class and spontaneous hallway conversations with friends.
During his time at Poole College, Hong served as president of the Undergraduate Student Advisory Board, completed four internships, and participated in a three-week marketing study abroad program in Reims, France. He also is a member of the international honor society, Beta Gamma Sigma.
Hong is excited for what comes next. After graduation, he’ll begin his full-time role as a brand marketing account executive with NASCAR in Charlotte, following a successful internship in the same department last summer.
Still, as he prepares to address the Class of 2025, his focus is on celebrating the journey.
“I just want to share something that makes people feel seen and inspired,” he said. “Because that’s what Poole has done for me.”
