{"id":10951,"date":"2019-05-23T17:23:40","date_gmt":"2019-05-23T21:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news-new\/?p=10951"},"modified":"2019-05-24T09:23:06","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T13:23:06","slug":"10951","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/23\/10951\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Bill Rand: Understanding Complex Networks, Data-driven Decisionmaking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI&#8217;m interested in understanding how people find things out, what they do with that information once they have it, and how they pass it on to others\u201d, says Bill Rand, associate professor of marketing in NC State Poole College of Management\u2019s Department of Business Management.<\/p>\n<p>NC State\u2019s strong engineering focus was a big draw for Rand, who has his doctorate in computer science.\u00a0As a faculty member, he is interested in complex networks and \u201chow people are processing all the plethora of information they&#8217;re getting right now. \u2026 The interdisciplinary nature of NC State not only helps the research that I&#8217;m doing, but is crucial to it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>From an industry perspective, \u00a0he said, \u201cI\u2019m really interested in trying to help industry and non-profits think about how they can use data to make better decisions, and a lot of times, that&#8217;s taking advantage of new data sources, like social media. Using new computational methods to understand this data is one of the areas where we&#8217;ll have a large impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor students, I try and bring the research into the classroom on a regular basis \u2026 (to) provide them with a new way of thinking,\u201d he said. In teaching digital marketing, for example, \u201cwe&#8217;re really interested in understanding how we can get our messages to our consumers through digital platforms.
