{"id":222293,"date":"2024-07-26T17:04:46","date_gmt":"2024-07-26T21:04:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/?p=222293"},"modified":"2025-06-30T12:24:24","modified_gmt":"2025-06-30T16:24:24","slug":"poole-advisory-board-spotlight-rance-poehler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/2024\/07\/26\/poole-advisory-board-spotlight-rance-poehler\/","title":{"rendered":"Poole Advisory Board Spotlight: Rance Poehler"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p>Before Rance Poehler became president and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/commerce.toshiba.com\/\">Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions<\/a> in late 2020, the company had little connection with NC State and the <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/\">Poole College of Management<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In less than four years, the university has gone from zero to 40 student internships at Toshiba, now based at Research Triangle Park, as Poehler has helped integrate the university and company through many initiatives as a corporate sponsor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result for Poole students? Impactful experiences that include internships; career fairs; mentorship opportunities for specific populations; coffee chats, practice interviews and job-search guidance with Toshiba representatives; and sponsorship of a <a href=\"https:\/\/mba.ncsu.edu\/\">Jenkins MBA<\/a> orientation program. Two Poole graduates so far accepted full-time employment with the company.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Toshiba\u2019s global headquarters in Raleigh, \u201cWe wanted to get engaged at NC State. We wanted to be part of the community,\u201d Poehler says. \u201cNow we\u2019re very tightly linked to the universities here, especially NC State. We\u2019re committed as a corporate citizen. The board\u2019s senior-level executives, entrepreneurs and other business leaders discuss relevant industry trends and emerging technologies with Poole officials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn a personal level, at this stage in my career, giving back is very important. If I can give guidance, mentoring or ideas to even one student that they take action on to improve themselves, that\u2019s great to see. That\u2019s fulfilling,\u201d Poehler says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He already has experienced that fulfillment. He recently finished working with two students in a Poole mentoring program, and he has been a guest speaker in undergraduate and MBA classes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-custombg-one-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">If I can give guidance, mentoring or ideas to even one student that they take action on to improve themselves, that\u2019s fulfilling.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Toshiba, a global leader in retail commerce technology, supplies retail giants such as Costco, Kroger, Walgreens and Walmart. Before he joined Toshiba, Poehler spent more than 30 years in executive roles with B2B technology companies, including Dell, IBM and Panasonic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that stellar background, as an advisory board member \u201cI hope to give Poole a business sense, a business sanity check, about what\u2019s important to large companies and to large customers,\u201d Poehler says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At his first board meeting, he discussed Poole graduates entering the workforce and advised the board on \u201cpreparing students as they interview for jobs, giving them the perspective of a global company that does business with the largest retailers in the world,\u201d Poehler notes. He also addressed preparing students in the context of AI in the workplace.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key to future business success for Poole graduates is being open to lifelong learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always pushed myself to keep growing. It has motivated me to learn new things and develop new skills,\u201d Poehler says. \u201cI talk to students about this. They\u2019ve got to push themselves and work hard. I\u2019ve always worked hard. Poole has an important role to play in inspiring students on that path.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to develop leaders in the U.S. We\u2019re lacking individuals who want to lead,\u201d Poehler says. \u201cIt\u2019s extremely important for Poole to help develop future leaders of our country, people who are willing to take risks and make business decisions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a business leader with extensive experience taking risks and making business decisions, Poehler is well-positioned to advise Poole officials on instilling that passion in students.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I really enjoy about Poole is that it\u2019s not into politics. The university has done a good job of staying centered,\u201d he says. \u201cI can tell that NC State students in general are good, centered individuals.
