{"id":222315,"date":"2024-08-01T17:45:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T21:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/?p=222315"},"modified":"2024-08-01T17:46:31","modified_gmt":"2024-08-01T21:46:31","slug":"poole-advisory-board-spotlight-siobhan-pandya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/01\/poole-advisory-board-spotlight-siobhan-pandya\/","title":{"rendered":"Poole Advisory Board Spotlight: Siobhan Pandya"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p>Before Siobhan Pandya\u2019s husband, Poole College alumnus Rupesh Kotiya, died in 2023, the couple established an <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/magazine\/kotiya-scholarship-honors-a-life-full-of-love-and-friendship\/\">endowment<\/a> in his name to provide need-based scholarships for business undergraduates.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was an intense NC State fan. He wanted to do anything he could to support the university,\u201d Pandya says of her husband, a 1998 graduate who had ALS, also called Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease. \u201cWe wanted to make sure we gave back to the university.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s still giving back \u2014 now as a new member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/about\/advisory-board\/\">Poole College Advisory Board<\/a>. The board\u2019s senior-level executives, entrepreneurs and other business leaders discuss relevant industry trends and emerging technologies with Poole officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI realized I had a skill set that could support the university in a different way,\u201d Pandya says. \u201cBecause my husband and I were huge proponents of education as being a great equalizer, I thought this would be a good way to support the university in a more hands-on way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pandya, senior director of business assurance and excellence for Mary Kay Inc. and board member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), brings a deep reservoir of hands-on experiences to inform her tenure on Poole\u2019s board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s involved with setting the overall direction of ACCA, the world\u2019s largest professional accounting organization, through regular approval of the strategy, engaging with members to promote the strategic direction, and providing an objective environment for the executive team to explore new ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From that role, \u201cI understand the importance of education and how the delivery of education is changing, partly from the impacts of AI and the coronavirus on the next generation. I also understand we have a gap right now between what the world needs and where many students are at when they graduate,\u201d says Pandya, of Dallas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is especially interested in technology\u2019s impact on learning, taking exams, and the skills students need when they graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe really need to make sure we\u2019re offering the support students need, both from a technical skills and soft skills perspective, and ensure that we are all functioning successfully in this new world,\u201d she says. Communication and analytical abilities are crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For students to successfully operate in an emerging business ecosystem after they graduate, Pandya offers some guidance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cListen and observe. Be a sponge, and take those first few years to learn as much as you can,\u201d she says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t wait too long for the perfect opportunity. \u201cAll experience is good experience,\u201d she notes. \u201cEven if it\u2019s not a job you want ultimately, you\u2019ll still learn something.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be open to ongoing education and acquiring new skills to stay relevant in the workplace. \u201cYou really need to know how to bring value, to understand what you\u2019re doing, why you\u2019re doing it and the difference you can make. If you\u2019re constantly bringing value, you can be an asset to any organization you go to,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pandya plans to be an asset to Poole\u2019s board by helping the college build on its strong foundation to enhance the education it delivers. That includes new industry partnerships that offer students real-world experience and highlight their skills to organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Pandya\u2019s perspective, Poole is distinct from other business schools in a key way: its focus on a highly relevant education that students can leverage to better themselves, make an impact and improve their world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPoole\u2019s forward-thinking approach, constant evolution and putting students at the heart of everything they do\u2026show that it\u2019s about students, not just about the finances and their reputation,\u201d she says. \u201cThrough the passion of faculty, staff and alumni, everyone is honestly invested.
