And then I think, how can we improve it?\u201d Rand says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He recently received an award that will help him mentor other professors to make improvements in their fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rand, director of <a href=\"https:\/\/bai.poole.ncsu.edu\/\">Poole\u2019s Business Analytics and AI Initiative (BAI)<\/a>, is one of four NC State professors chosen for the <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/2025\/05\/08\/bill-rand-among-2025-outstanding-research-award-winners\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/2025\/05\/08\/bill-rand-among-2025-outstanding-research-award-winners\/\">2025 Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award<\/a>. They\u2019ve also been inducted into the university\u2019s Research Leadership Academy, part of the Office of Research and Innovation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would be great to harvest NC State\u2019s research resources to apply them to the social sciences,\u201d says Rand, only the second Poole professor, after <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/rbhandfi\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/rbhandfi\/\">Rob Handfield<\/a>, selected for the academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leading the BAI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With Rand\u2019s BAI leadership, Poole\u2019s undergraduate business analytics program is ranked No. 1 in North Carolina and No. 10 among U.S. public universities in 2025 by <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em>. The publication ranks Poole\u2019s online business analytics MBA program eighth in the U.S. in 2025.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rand, co-chair of the university\u2019s AI advisory group, leads the research subgroup, which offers guidance on new tools in generative AI, or machine learning that produces images, videos and text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the research academy, he\u2019ll promote research and faculty mentoring campus-wide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome people don\u2019t think of a business school as a place where research is done,\u201d Rand says. \u201cBut the research Poole is doing contributes just as much to the overall notion of science as what comes out of the physical sciences or engineering. The methods Rand develops can be applied to other disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He uses computational modeling techniques to examine real-world situations that influence data-driven decisions. \u201cAlmost all my work,\u201d he says, \u201chas been about how to create a model in a computer that represents reality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reality he\u2019s studying in one project is HIV prevention, working with Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Rand and the BAI are applying methods he created in business research to help Kenyan doctors identify women possibly at high risk of HIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re now using these techniques to help doctors understand how to educate people about very scary illnesses,\u201d Rand says.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Studying the Shortcomings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of his current research focuses on AI\u2019s pitfalls.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid concerns about incorrect information \u2014 called hallucinations \u2014 in generative AI, Rand and his colleagues are researching transparency with the technology. He\u2019s studying whether requiring AI attribution with materials people create may encourage them not to take responsibility for accuracy. \u201cWhen attribution is required, it distances them from that product,\u201d he says. \u201cIf it\u2019s wrong, it\u2019s AI\u2019s fault, not their fault.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s also tackling AI algorithmic biases, found in employment, education and other areas.<strong> <\/strong>\u201cAs we know, historically humans are biased, and AI is trained and can reproduce those biases,\u201d Rand says. \u201cCompanies may be using biased algorithms without even knowing it. So all companies should ask for some kind of algorithmic accountability\u201d and disclose the results to consumers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His research aligns with his role as director of the BAI, which he and <a href=\"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/people\/rswarr\/\">Poole associate dean Richard Warr<\/a> developed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Impact of BAI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The BAI, which launched five years ago, has made a big impact on education, research and thought leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rand\u2019s initiative helps coordinate cross-college academic programs at Poole, including master\u2019s programs in <a href=\"https:\/\/ma.poole.ncsu.edu\/\">marketing analytics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ra.poole.ncsu.edu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ra.poole.ncsu.edu\/\">management and risk analytics<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.ncsu.edu\/undergraduate\/management\/business\/business-administration-bs-business-analytics-concentration\/\">business analytics undergraduate concentration<\/a>. A business analytics concentration for economics students and a graduate certificate in business AI are coming.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BAI brings in research funding, including support for his Kenyan HIV project. Spending time with them is amazing,\u201d he says. \u201cPoole students bring a lot of interest in entrepreneurship and innovation.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rand can take some credit for inspiring innovation in others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe number one thing that motivates me is intellectual curiosity,\u201d he says. \u201cI take into account how humans interact with the systems I see.
