Between the World and Me<\/span><\/i> by Ta-Nehisi Coates is NC State\u2019s 2017 <\/span>Common Reading Program<\/span><\/a> selection. The book confronts the social construction of race and the role it has played in our nation\u2019s past and present, while seamlessly interweaving a personal narrative that demonstrates how our collective history as a country can have personal implications for individuals in our society.<\/span><\/p>\n

Incoming students will receive their copy of <\/span>Between the World and Me <\/span><\/i>at New Student Orientation. A study guide for students will be available in late June to assist in them in understanding <\/span>Between the World and Me<\/span><\/i> and provide questions to consider as they read. Faculty, staff and students are invited to learn more about the text and how it relates to students\u2019 first-year experience at NC State\u2019s convocation on Monday, Aug. 14 in Reynolds Coliseum.<\/span><\/p>\n

To promote the goals of the Common Reading Program, the university has established a Common Reading Mini-Grant Program. This program provides funding to members of the campus community to develop and implement programs that engage first-year students with the Common Reading selection. Information on submitting a proposal will be available mid-summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2016, the Common Reading Program awarded grants, totaling $3,000, to four proposed programs across campus. <\/span>Learn more<\/span><\/a> about last year\u2019s winners and get grant proposal ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n
