{"id":6034,"date":"2018-01-03T07:00:43","date_gmt":"2018-01-03T12:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news-new\/2018\/01\/03\/combining-experiments-models-boosts-social-behavior-research\/"},"modified":"2023-03-04T15:10:26","modified_gmt":"2023-03-04T20:10:26","slug":"combining-experiments-models-boosts-social-behavior-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poole.ncsu.edu\/news\/2018\/01\/03\/combining-experiments-models-boosts-social-behavior-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Combining Experiments, Models Boosts Social Behavior Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from North Carolina State University and Northwestern University are outlining a new approach to behavioral research that draws on experimental studies and computer models to offer new insights into organizational and group behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial research has a history of using both small-scale experiments and computer models to explore questions about human behavior \u2013 but there are very few examples of how to use these two techniques in concert,\u201d says William Rand, a computer scientist and assistant professor of business management in NC State\u2019s Poole College of Management who is co-lead author of a paper describing the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis paper details an approach that we feel capitalizes on the best aspects of both research techniques to advance our understanding of the behavior of large groups and advance the field,\u201d says Ned Smith, an associate professor of management and organizations at Northwestern University\u2019s Kellogg School of Management, who is co-lead author of the paper.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how the approach works. Researchers design and conduct experiments aimed at addressing a behavioral question, such as how a small group tries to solve a particular problem. The data from those experiments can then be fed into a model, allowing researchers to predict how this behavior would manifest itself on a larger scale. The results of the model may then be used to inform future experiments, further validating the model or shedding new light on the research question.<\/p>\n<p>For example, experiments may find that groups take two different approaches to solving a given problem. The model could then help researchers predict which circumstances lead groups to choose one approach over the other. The researchers can then devise additional experiments to determine whether the model is correct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis sort of work can help us answer questions that have relevance for everything from business management to public policy,\u201d Rand says. \u201cThat\u2019s because computer models provide us with a testbed to explore how sensitive lab results are to the particular settings they are constructed around, as well as examining policy interventions that may alter social behavior in beneficial ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal with this paper is to make people aware of this approach, which makes good use of experimental data and advances in computational modeling,\u201d Rand says. \u201cWe think this is a valuable tool that could help advance the field of organizational behavior as a whole. While both ABM and lab experiments have similar aims\u2014to identify the rules, tendencies, and heuristics by which individual agents make decisions and respond to external stimuli\u2014they work toward their common goal in notably different ways. Behavioral-lab research typically exposes human subjects to experimental manipulations, or treatments, to make causal inferences by observing variation in response to the treatment. ABM researchers ascribe individual simulated &#8220;agents&#8221; with decision rules describing their behavior and subsequently attempt to replicate &#8220;macro&#8221; level empirical patterns. Integrating ABM and lab experiments presents advantages for both sets of researchers. ABM researchers will benefit from exposure to a larger set of empirically-validated mechanisms that can add nuance and refinement to their models of human behavior and system dynamics. Lab-oriented researchers will gain from ABM a method for assessing the validity and magnitude of their findings, adjudicating between competing mechanisms, developing new theory to test in the lab, and exploring macro-level, long-run implications of subtle, micro-level observations that can be difficult to observe in the field.
