Sremaniak Receives Equity for Women Award

Laura Sremaniak, teaching professor in the Department of Chemistry, received the Equity for Women Award at NC State’s Sisterhood Dinner ceremony on Feb. 26. The Equity for Women Award is made annually to recognize faculty, staff and students for their outstanding leadership in establishing equity for women at NC State.

Sremaniak earned her B.S. in chemistry from the University of South Carolina in 1991 and her Ph.D. in chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1996. Throughout her career, she has made outstanding contributions to outreach, teaching and promoting women in science. She was previously associate chair of the Department of Chemistry, and in that role she gained a reputation for championing the rights of female faculty and staff. As the chair of the American Chemical Society’s Women Chemists Committee, she has been an advocate for many issues important to women, especially on improving employment conditions for non-tenure-track faculty.

Winners of the Equity for Women Award demonstrate leadership by taking action to promote gender equity on and beyond campus through leadership roles, service by supporting equity for women through job-related or voluntary roles, and scholarship by contributing new knowledge and informing policy and practice related to women’s well-being and equality.

Nominations are solicited from all members of the campus community, including faculty, staff, students, alumni and partners. The award is presented by the university’s Council on the Status of Women.
