CFO Dive reported on new research by Poole College’s Carly Burd about the benefit of transparency in company reports. Burd, an assistant professor of accounting, published a study examining whether including certain tax-related information in reports benefited or hurt publicly traded companies. She ultimately determined that it increases transparency and allows investors to make more informed decisions.

CFO Dive reached out to Burd for comment. “Analysts are better enabled to implicitly forecast tax outcomes when firms report more granular numeric tax detail, especially in the footnotes, which is most valuable for firms with complex tax positions,” she said. “Narrative disclosure helps, but not in the way numeric does.”
