The idea isn\u2019t new, but it\u2019s gained momentum. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a series of workforce changes that were likely on the horizon in the coming decades anyway, and that\u2019s driven conversations about \u201cthe new normal\u201d at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several companies have piloted four-day work weeks internationally, and their efforts have shown that reducing the number of weekly work days for employees doesn\u2019t necessarily hurt the bottom line. Their employees report reduced stress and enhanced well-being, and studies across the world offer promising evidence:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Japan, Microsoft employees were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2019\/nov\/04\/microsoft-japan-four-day-work-week-productivity\">40 percent more productive<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In New Zealand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-01\/unilever-expands-four-day-work-week-to-australia-after-nz-pilot\">absenteeism and stress levels went down<\/a> among Unilever workers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the United Kingdom, <a href=\"https:\/\/autonomy.work\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/The-results-are-in-The-UKs-four-day-week-pilot.pdf\">a study of 61 companies\u2019 four-day-work-week pilots<\/a> showed lower stress, better work-life balance, more sleep, and higher retention for employees\u2013with no declines in average revenue for the companies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These results are encouraging, and they show clear benefits to rethinking the work week. Offering a four-day work week or other flexible working arrangement may help employers to attract new talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite those benefits, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.henley.ac.uk\/v3\/fileUploads\/Four-day-week-white-paper-FINAL.pdf\">factors employers must consider<\/a> before implementing a four-day work week. One is serving customers who expect full-time availability. Another is the actual implementation: Does shifting to four days mean simply shutting down for an additional day per week?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, there are questions related to pay and equity. Should employees receive full-time pay for part-time work? How can changes in work arrangements be distributed fairly to all employees?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies should be cautious in adopting four-day-work-week policies. They can be \u201cwin-wins\u201d for businesses and employees alike, but the work environment context and culture may determine whether any given company replicates the success we\u2019ve outlined here. <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/finance\/4405349-theres-no-magic-in-a-four-day-workweek\/\">There are no magic, one-size-fits-all solutions<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the benefits of an extra day off will likely be quite different in workplaces where workers already have some workday flexibility than in settings where they don\u2019t, such as a Department of Motor Vehicles office or an Amazon warehouse. The four-day work week may be particularly appealing to workers who have some autonomy over when and how the work gets done, or for those who regularly work more than 40 hours per week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four-day work week may not be the right solution (or only option) for every company. If we\u2019ve learned anything from the pandemic, it\u2019s that there should be a suite of offerings that give workers an element of choice in balancing work and non-work time. A worker trying to make ends meet may choose to work multiple jobs or volunteer for <em>extra<\/em> hours, while a caregiver may value week-to-week schedule flexibility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Should you follow the four-day trend or forge your own path?
