TRANSITIONING FROM HIGH SCHOOL
In Poole College of Management, we understand that coming from high school can be an interesting transition as you seek out community on campus and in your peers.
Meet Marlon Kinnard, a mentor and RA within the Black Male Initiative, one of NC State's many Living and Learning Initiatives, specifically aimed at "promoting brotherhood and developing leaders through academic success, personal growth, professional development, and self-responsibility." Within BMI, Marlon has grown from a mentee to a mentor!
He is an out of state senior in the Poole College of Management from Las Vegas, NV! Majoring in Accounting with a minor in Spanish, Marlon is actively involved in Poole College, both in academics and involvement!
He has been able to grow in his sense of identity with his involvement in the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), helping plan events for Black History month, and assisting in planning events for campus-wide Pan-Afrikan week. Additionally, he attends all of our Inclusive By Design signature events where he supports other students in growing within and celebrating their own identities.
As a new student entering Poole College, you can follow in Marlon's footsteps, with opportunities like:
- Assist Poole Diversity with our Heritage Month events
- Get involved with one of our student-led affinity groups: Association of Latinx Professionals for America, Black Business Students Association, National Association of Black Accountants, and Women in Busines
- Join Poole Advocates for Corporate Change
- Help Poole Diversity in planning our signature Inclusive By Design events
The path to allyship starts here!
Inclusive leadership is a skill set to develop for successful business leaders.
While you are in Poole you will:
1. Understand your personal identity in its layers
2. Distinguish bias when it shows up in personal behavior or organizational systems
3. Create new ways of operating with more inclusion
