Recruiting season brings another career fair
Poole College’s career fair attracted 1,382 students to the McKimmon Center on Friday September 23.
The Office of Undergraduate Programs’ Director of Career and Internship Development, Brian Newton, says that the goal of the career fair is to offer an event where Poole Students can meet employees who are hiring for jobs and internships.
“This is an opportunity to make really good connections and to get students comfortable articulating their values and tell employers what they have to offer,” said Newton.
There were several events leading up to the career fair.
The Resume Blitz, an event where companies came in and critiqued resumes, was held five times. The peer leader career coaches sponsored a career fair boot camp along with their drop in hours. There was also a professional development expo at Talley Student Union where 12 companies offered workshops on career and professional development.
Poole College is also going into its third year of using the Career Fair app. Newton is fairly pleased with the effectiveness of the app.
“It is a great tool for students to navigate and prepare for the career fair,” said Newton. “The advantages of the app are that students are able to make a favorites list instead of taking a piece of paper with them and they are able to take notes about the companies they like.”
There were about 570 users on the day of the career fair.
Newton encourages the students to attend the event because it is a ‘win-win situation’. Companies are excited to meet the students and there is not another environment where more than 100 companies are going to want to potentially hire students.
Next semester’s career fair will be on February 3, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
