Poole College accounting team advances to Deloitte FanTAXtic nationals

A team of five NC State Poole College of Management accounting students won the 2013 Deloitte FanTAXtic Regional Case Competition held on November 1 and 2, 2013, in Charlotte, N.C.

The team developed a solution to a tax case and presented it to tax professionals from various Deloitte offices in Charlotte. The competition was held via a distance learning system that Deloitte uses. 

On Poole College’s winning team are Mo Chen, Master of Accounting student, and Dian Chen, accounting senior; Nicholas Baum, accounting junior; Ethan Chelbowski, accounting sophomore; and Karan Singh, accounting sophomore. Their faculty advisor is John Giles, accounting instructor in Poole College’s Department of Accounting.

The regional winners are now preparing for the national Deloitte FanTAXtic Case Competitiontrip which will be held at Deloitte University near Dallas, Texas, in January 2014. Poole College's team will compete against regional finalists from eight other U.S. universities: Brigham Young University, Fordham University, the University of Northern Colorado, St. John Fisher College, the University of Southern California, Texas A&M University, the College of William & Mary, and the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

 

Receiving regional honorable mention awards are teams from Boston College, Fordham University, John Carroll University, University of North Carolina – Charlotte, Northern Illinois University, The Ohio State University, University of Southern California, University of Texas – Austin and University of Utah.

Members of the Deloitte FanTAXtic National Planning Team, in an email message announcing the regional winners, wrote, “We were genuinely impressed by the quality of presentations submitted by the participating teams, and hope your students found the experience to be a good investment of their time.” 

About the Deloitte FanTAXtic Case Study Competition

The Deloitte FanTAXtic interscholastic competition, sponsored annually by Deloitte Tax LLP, national tax recruiting and the Deloitte Foundation, is an educational program for students from some of the nation’s top accounting and tax programs. The competition features a reality-based case, student team presentations in Deloitte office telesuites, opportunities for networking with tax professionals and a chance to compete in the national event at Deloitte’s learning and leadership development center near Dallas, Deloitte University. Approximately 100 schools are invited to participate each year. All winning teams receive financial rewards for the team member and their schools.
