College Prepares for First Leadership and Innovation Showcase

“This event will showcase our students’ work in their practicum classes and special projects – part of our real world approach to business education,” said Ira R. Weiss, dean of the college. The students’ displays will present the results of their projects and the students will be on hand to fill in the details of their experiences.

James E. Owens, chairman and chief executive officer of Caterpillar, will present the awards to the winning project teams. Owens himself will be formally recognized as the college’s 2009 Person of the Year award recipient as part of the event.

Students in all academic programs in the college, in all disciplines, are encouraged to participate in this event and compete for the scholarship prizes that will be awarded to the winning teams. Prizes aside, the showcase is intended as an opportunity for students to display their work to other students in the college, as well as members of the college’s alumni and professional network in the area.

The showcase will be held in the Nelson Commons, on the second floor of Nelson Hall, and in other areas in the building.

Students will present posters that summarize a project completed in the fall 2008 or spring 2009 semester. Consistent with the college’s mission – to develop students into tomorrow’s business leaders – criteria upon which the the Leadership and Innovation Showcase projects will be based include:

  • Demonstrate thought leadership and real-world application of business principles
  • Address important business challenges and opportunities
  • Provide summary of key insights about the project
  • Communicate the classroom theory applied for project problem-solving

Scholarships will be awarded to each winning group’s group participants, as follows:

Undergraduate Projects Awards:

  • First Place – $750 per project
  • Second Place – $500 per project

Graduate Projects Awards:

  • First Place – $1,250 per project
  • Second Place – $1,000 per project
  • Third Place – $750 per project
