Dr. Joe Brazel Awarded First Reznick Faculty Research Fellowship

The Poole College of Management at NC State University announces that Dr. Joe Brazel, associate professor of accounting in the Poole College of Management at North Carolina State University, was awarded the Reznick Group (CohnReznick as of 2015) Faculty Research Fellowship. Brazel is the first recipient of the fellowship, which was established in Poole College’s Department of Accounting in spring 2012.

The fellowship is funded by a gift of $75,000 made to the college in 2012 by Reznick Group’s Charlotte, N.C., office to support the recipient’s research activities, including publications and attendance at forums and academic conferences. It is awarded for an initial three-year term to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellent research performance over the past five years.

“This kind of support is very important for the college, as support of research and the resulting development of thought leadership among our faculty helps to assure a quality curriculum and learning environment for our students,” said Dr. Frank Buckless, professor and head of the college’s Department of Accounting.

Brazel’s research focuses on fraudulent financial reporting, fraud detection, judgment and decision-making, internal controls and other factors that are key to effective auditing practices. He is principal investigator for two research grants awarded by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), and his research has been published in leading accounting journals and practitioner publications.

He teaches financial accounting, managerial accounting, and risk and assurance, and developed a course in advanced auditing that he teaches students in the college’s Jenkins Master of Accounting program.

Reznick Group has been a strong supporter of the college, as evidenced by the internship and employment opportunities it offers to NC State Poole College graduates.

“Our support of the Accounting faculty will help Poole College of Management retain the best and brightest professors to help ensure the school is providing the top talent for the public accounting industry. We look forward to having many more NC State alumni in leadership positions within our organization,” said Debbie Dancy, the firm’s senior manager of human resources.

Brazel joined the Poole College faculty in 2003 and was named associate professor in 2009. He received his doctorate in business administration, focusing on accounting and quantitative methods, from Drexel University in 2004; his master of business administration with a concentration in accounting from Drexel in 2003, and his bachelor’s degree in accounting and economics from Muhlenberg College in 1994.

Brazel resides in Raleigh, N.C., with his wife and children.
