NC State AMA chapter helps Habitat for Humanity build a home

While student groups across the NC State campus – including a Poole College team – are building up financial support for Habitat for Humanity of Wake County through NC State’s 2014 Shack-a-Thon, one group spent a weekend recently building a home for an area family.

Eleven members of NC State’s American Marketing Association (AMA) student chapter volunteered with Habitat for Humanity of Wake County in early September to help build a home for a family in downtown Raleigh.

“It was truly an amazing opportunity to work with the community and to be a part of building a home for a family. It was an experience I will never forget,” said Erica Miller, vice president of communications for the student AMA chapter. The organization has worked with Habitat for Humanity in the past and tries to complete a service event for them every semester.

“I loved seeing all the different groups of people come together as a community to help build a home. I am just so grateful that I got to be a part of it,” said Haley Halteman, a senior majoring in business administration and AMA member.

The group helped to install insulation around the house that they worked on, added nails inside the house to secure the foundation, installed top plate of framing on all walls to secure stability, and also helped construct gable end truss and set it in position.

“This was my first time building for Habitat for Humanity. It was a lot of fun and I even learned a few things! I'm also glad that I'm able to make an impact on the community, even if it’s a small impact,” said Andrew Giles, a junior in business administration and AMA member.

“What a rewarding experience it was to work with the members of The American Marketing Association this past Saturday. Habitat for Humanity is such a strong organization that influences the lives of the home owners and the volunteers. I am so glad our club was able to work together to make a difference in the Raleigh community,” said Sydni Collins, a senior in business administration and AMA club member.
