NC State Student SHRM Chapter Receives Prestigious Award
The NC State University student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) at Poole College of Management was awarded the 2015-2016 Superior Merit Chapter Award. The award recognizes the superior growth and development opportunities the student organization provided to its members in the past academic year.
NC State’s SHRM chapter was one of 163 student chapters chosen to receive the merit award out of the 206 who applied. The SHRM student merit award program, founded in 1972, was created to encourage student chapters to achieve ongoing excellence in the following categories: chapter requirements, chapter programming and professional development, chapter operations, and support of the human resource profession.
“These chapters truly represent the future of the HR profession,” said Susan Post, SHRM-SCP, East divisional director at SHRM and the lead for SHRM’s Student Programs. “Their achievements go above and beyond their everyday academic and work commitments and we applaud the positive impact their efforts have on their schools, their local communities and beyond.”
“I am proud of the student leaders’ efforts to conduct meaningful meetings, exciting site visits and engaging activities for their members,” said Beth Ritter, lecturer in human resources at the Poole College of Management. “Each meeting includes employer interaction and networking. I am particularly pleased that the chapter’s community service efforts benefited middle school students in Durham.”
That community service included reaching out through 100 handwritten letters to children at Durham’s Neal Middle School, encouraging them both in their current studies and to consider college as part of their future plans. The diversity of the SHRM chapter’s leadership team, which included students who were the first in their families to go to college, enabled the chapter members to connect with the middle school students in this outreach activity.
Founded in 1948, SHRM is the world’s largest human resource management organization. With over 275,000 members worldwide, SHRM is the leading provider of resources for advancing the human resource practice and meeting the needs of HR professionals around the world.
