Poole College Participates in Shackathon

UPDATE: Poole College’s team is is in third place among participating colleges and third among the 26 student groups raising funds in this year’s annual Shack-a-Thon competition. Their collective goal: to raise $65,000 in support of Habitat for Humanity of Wake County. As of September 28, the fundraising campaign has raised $43,503. The Poole College team is just over half-way toward its goal of $10,500. Donations will be accepted through Friday, September 30.

Following is the original story about the event. 

A team of Poole College students this week built the college’s ‘shack,’ and lived in it throughout the week, ignoring the rain and moving toward the their goal of raising $10,500. Working collaboratively with many of the college’s student organizations, they are at $5285.70, half-way to goal. Their current total has them in second place, behind the Calwell Fellows shack team.

Funds have been raised directly online (click here to donate), as well as through the sale of baked goods, raffle tickets for prizes and other activities. Poole faculty, staff and students are encouraged to stop by the Poole Shack to visit with the students ‘living’ there ths week, and enjoy games and entertainment. The Poole College shack is one of the first shacks you’ll see when entering the Brickyard from the Free Expression Tunnel.

Leading Poole College’s shack team this year are:

• Allie Hanks and Sam Arneson, both seniors in business administration concentrating in marketing and finance, and
• John Dinkins a sophomore in business administration concentrating in finance.

“Habitat for Humanity is a good organization,” Arneson said, adding, “I have always loved construction and Poole College has historically done very well.”

Alexander Simpson, also a senior in business administration with a concentration in finance, is the fundraising chair for the NC State Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Simpson is involved with the Build-A-Block chapter at NC State and says that last year and this year are historic years.

“Last year Chancellor Woodson announced that NC State [is teaming up with] Habitat for Humanity to build 11 townhomes,” Simpson said. “One hundred percent of the money raised is going to Build-A-Block.”

To get involved in Shack-A-Thon, students have to submit a $250 down payment and are expected to meet their fundraising goal throughout the week. One person is required to be at the shack from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and two people are required to be at the shack between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Visit the Poole Shack on the brickyard this week and lend your support!
