NC State’s MAC Students Clean Up Lake Raleigh on NCACPA Annual Day of Service

About 75 students in the NC State Poole College of Management’s Master of Accounting program teamed up with NC State’s Sustainability Office to clean up Lake Raleigh on NC State’s Centennial Campus.

For two hours on September 23, the students and staff worked at the lake, pulling weeds, brush and kudzu from the pathway. Several also got into a canoe to collect loose tree branches, bottles and garbage from in and around the lake, filling up several large trash bags.

Their efforts were part of the Fifth Annual NC CPA Day of Service, created by the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA) as a way for members to give back to their communities. Over 2,500 individuals and 300 firms and organizations participated statewide on the 2016 Day of Service.

It was the second year in a row that the MAC program teamed up with NC State’s Sustainability Office to clean up Lake Raleigh for their day of service activity. Participating with the MAC students were Dr. Kathy Krawczyk, Dixon Hughes Professor of Accounting and director of the MAC program; Scott Showalter, professor of practice in the college’s Department of Accounting; Liz Bowen, program director in the University Sustainability Office; and NC State’s grounds crew members. Their collective efforts are helping to renew the health and sanitation of the lake.

“It is one of those projects that needs to get done, but the grounds crew at NC State has so many projects that need to get done,” Krawczyk said.

The college’s MAC Program previously participated in projects arranged by the NCACPA in 2012 and 2013. The NCACPA Day of Service reflects the vital role CPAs have in both the financial and social fabric of North Carolina’s communities.
