Jesse Ellis, associate professor of finance in the Department of Business Management at Poole College, is one of 20 NC State University professors selected as University Faculty Scholars for 2018-19 in recognition of their academic scholarship.

Each year, approximately 20 tenured or tenure-track NC State professors are selected from among those nominated by their colleges. Honorees receive a permanent increase to their base salary to support their academic endeavors and carry the title for the duration of their faculty appointment at NC State.

His research focuses on empirical corporate finance and investment management, with a primary interest in the study of hedge funds, corporate governance, corporate disclosure and industrial organization. His recent research has focused on corruption and corporate innovation, directors who have experience with forced CEO turnovers, ideology and portfolio choice among politicians, and the role of turnaround specialists.

Ellis has published articles in the Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial Economics, Management Science, and the Journal of Accounting Research, and has been featured in business news stories published by Financial Times, the Economist, Reuters, Institutional Investor and The Business Insider.

Last summer, Ellis was one of seven Poole College professors to receive a Poole College Summer Research Award that carried the title, Poole Advisory Board Scholar for the 2017-18 academic year. He discusses his research in an article announcing that award.

Ellis received a Best Paper Award at the Mid-Atlantic Research Conference in 2014 and a Best Paper Award at the Financial Management Association conference. He also has received a Poole College Award for Research Growth and Innovation in 2015, as well as a departmental award that year.
