Poole College Announces 2019 Beta Gamma Sigma Inductees
Sixty-two NC State Poole College of Management undergraduate and graduate students – representing a cross-section of Poole College’s academic programs – were inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) at a ceremony held in the Nelson Hall auditorium Thursday evening, April 11. Jon Carr, Jenkins Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship at Poole College, was also inducted.
The ceremony was followed by a reception in the Nelson Hall Student Commons for the students and guests.s undergraduate and graduate academic programs, including the college’s international and dual degree program students.
“It is a big honor,” said Anna Lawson, a senior in business administration majoring in supply chain management, noting BGS’s lengthy history and global credibility.
Brian Smith, a junior in accounting, said he initially wasn’t sure he wanted to join BGS, but learned about the value of membership from Alissa Dodds, Poole College undergraduate academic and BGS advisor. “I looked into it and saw it does have a lot of value,” he said.
Dodds provided the welcome and presented this year’s BGS candidates at the ceremony. Also participating in the ceremony were Terry Price, student records and academic program coordinator; Annie Rasheva, NC State Jenkins MBA student and representative for the Raleigh/Durham BGS Alumni Chapter; Dr. Steven Allen, Poole College associate dean for graduate programs, and Dr. Paul Williams, Poole College professor of accounting.
As part of the induction ceremony, the students received a blue and gold cord that will be worn over their graduation gown during the commencement ceremony when they graduate.
About Beta Gamma Sigma
BGS, founded in 1913, is the international scholastic honor society for business, with more than 590 collegiate chapters on six continents. Membership is by invitation only to the top students at business schools accredited by AACSB International: juniors and seniors who are in the top 10 percent of their class, top 20 percent for master’s students, and all business doctoral students.
Its mission is to encourage and honor academic achievement in the study of business, to cultivate and celebrate leadership and professional excellence, to advance the values of the Society and to serve its lifelong members. who live in all 50 states in the U.S. and more than 190 countries. Among its resources are networking and professional development opportunities for its members. The North Carolina State University chapter was on the BGS Honor Roll in 2016-17. “Scholarships, conferences, events, and many more exclusive benefits are offered to BGS inductees,” Rasheva said in an interview after the event. “BGS members have access to the alumni chapters all over the world. The BGS RDU alumni chapter hosts a wide variety of events such as socials, workshops, speakers, and volunteer events. I find these so valuable because they allow me to meet other like-minded professionals in the area.”
“I first got involved with the BGS alumni chapter in August, 2017. I was inducted earlier that year as an undergraduate at NC State. Through my active involvement, I was recruited to be on the leadership board in February, 2018. I now assist with planning events for the members, maintaining engagement, and spreading awareness about the chapter.”
