From the Dean: Celebrating Latinx Heritage Month
Dear Poole community,
During the month of September our campus and college celebrate Latinx Heritage month. Although our celebrations look a little different this year, we are still excited about the opportunities to share stories on our students, faculty and staff.
This year Poole College will focus on the theme, Sin Limite, which translates to ‘Limitless”. The year has provided a lot of change, but the theme encourages us to celebrate and honor the Latinx heritage. As a community we can all work to better understand the diversity and dynamic fluidity of our colleagues and students who identify as Latinx or Hispanic.
Below are some great ways that you can learn more about the contributions of our Latinx community:
- Visit the Libraries dynamic timelines
- Join virtual campus events, such as Keynote Speaker Series and Mi Cocina (My Kitchen) Series on Instagram.
- Reach out to Alumni in the Latinx Alumni Network (founded by our very own Lyndenise Berdecia, BSBA class of ’06) to be guest speakers and content experts in a class or student organization event.
- Watch Immigration Nation currently available on Netflix.
- Read Understanding the Latinx Experience, for exposure on how identity influences the experience of Latinx students on a college campus.
- Read White Guys on Campus: Racism, White Immunity, and the Myth of “Post-Racial” Higher Education, winner of the 2019 Outstanding Book Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) to build awareness of systemic oppression in higher education.
