Meet Our Poole Student Interns

Felicity Hoppes

Uptown Indigo, Marketing and Event Planning Intern

How did you find the position?

I started working at Uptown Indigo last June as a part-time employee. The director, Duncan Blount, informed me of the internship in early May 2020, so I applied and instantly got an interview.

How has this experience helped you? What have you learned?

I have definitely grown as a professional. This internship has taught me the importance of marketing strategies and the day-to-day operation of a local business. I learned how to create and edit websites, how to monitor website traffic, how to build your SEO, and how to communicate with clients in a professional manner.

Unique Experiences

This summer, I worked on a huge mural for Uptown Indigo. The other intern and I worked all summer on painting 9 large plywood panels that would be eventually installed into the historic building. I also took weekly field trips to Charlotte and Asheville to scout out the competition and gain insight from other successful business owners in the area.

Advice to Others

An internship doesn’t have to pertain to your major. If it interests you, go for it! In my case, I never thought about going into event planning or social media management. This experience has given me the courage and drive to pursue a career in marketing and/or social media management. Some internships may be unpaid. My internship with Uptown Indigo was unpaid, and it was definitely a bummer. However, my boss and I worked together to find other ways that I could be compensated such as overtime pay, gas, and paid lunch (at least 3 times a week).

Johnny Guemple

Thomas, Judy & Tucker P.A., Tax Intern

How did you find the position?

Accounting Society – I went to one of the networking events in my Sophomore year and was contacted a few months later for an interview for a part time internship in my Junior year. After doing well, they offered me a full-time internship during the spring semester of my senior year. That internship turned into Spring and Summer with a full-time offer after I complete my MAC degree

How has this experience helped you? What have you learned?

I received experience interacting with several clients. I was able to sit in on calls where I learned how to respond to questions even if I didn’t know the answer immediately. I learned how to research a topic and then give training to several other Staff members, Managers, and Partners on how to apply my research.

Unique Experiences:

When the CARES Act was in the process of getting passed, I started reading up on and familiarizing myself with the Paycheck Protection Plan. After the loans were able to be processed by the SBA, I became an expert on PPP loans as I helped nearly 100 small businesses obtain the loan. In the last few months of my internship, I worked on the loan forgiveness piece and was able to assist even more clients with that, though it was a lot less hectic than the initial applications.

Advice to Others:

Actions speak louder than words. If you want to show your value to the company you are with, then come everyday prepared to get your work done well and efficiently. To add on, if you really want to stand out, you should continuously do more than what is expected of you.

ePACK

How has this experience helped you? What have you learned?

Working virtually has taught me another way of approaching solutions to problems. Since Eaton is a global company present in many countries serving 175 countries globally, I had the opportunity to connect with people all around the world.

Unique Experiences:

The experience of having a virtual internship was more exciting than I had anticipated. The coolest thing about Eaton is that everybody is always there to help you learn.

Advice to Others:

Please start looking for internships early in your career. You shouldn’t wait until your junior or senior to start looking for experience. Always state your academic projects in your resume when applying for internships when you don’t have any internship/work experience.
