Q&A with Monty Fowler
Tell me about your role within Poole College’s office of undergraduate advising.
I am a senior academic advisor and an advisor for the Poole Leaders organization. I assist students with degree planning, sit on various committees, and facilitate leadership development.
What are your top 5 CliftonStrengths?
Relator, Individualization, Harmony, Maximizer, Intellection
What brought you to Poole?
I was an advisor in the North Carolina Community College System for about six years and wanted to take the next step in my career. I’ve always wanted to be a member of the Wolfpack so when I saw this opportunity present itself, I knew I had to go for it!
What did you want to be growing up?
For the majority of my life, I wanted to be a high school chorus teacher. I received my bachelor’s degree in music (vocal performance) with a minor in education. I briefly taught and realized that wasn’t the path for me and that is what led me to higher education.
What do you appreciate most about working with students?
The different backgrounds and ideas that everyone brings to the table! I think I learn just as much from students as they (hopefully) learn from me. Watching their growth as a student and as a leader is a privilege.
If you had to give a piece of advice to a student just starting out in Poole, what would you tell them?
Use all your resources and seek help at the first sign of trouble! Visit career services, join a club and speak with an advisor!
Tell us a bit about your life outside of Poole.
I live with my wife, Charlie, in Wilson, NC. Charlie is an attorney with Legal Aide in Wilson. I’m currently pursuing my doctorate degree in educational leadership at East Carolina University – Dr. Fowler, here I come! I enjoy trying out new restaurants, going to concerts and traveling.
What is something your colleagues or Poole students might not know about you?
I went to three different colleges in my first three semesters as a college student! I started off at ECU, realized it was not the place for me at the time, transferred to my local community college in Maryland, and then transferred to St. Mary’s College of Maryland where I graduated from.
