For Yahir Sanchez-Vasquez, a senior in the Poole College of Management, serving as President of ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals for America) at NC State wasn’t just a leadership role–it was a transformative journey of growth, impact, and empowerment.

When Sanchez-Vasquez assumed the presidency, the organization was struggling with only 15 members. Determined to create a thriving, supportive community, he launched a strategic plan to revitalize ALPFA. Through outreach efforts, innovative programming, and fostering meaningful partnerships, he grew membership to over 65 students, making ALPFA one of the most active student organizations in the college.

One of his proudest achievements was the ALPFA Fiesta Latina, a vibrant celebration of Latinx culture during Latin Heritage Month. The event brought together over 150 students, faculty, and professionals, showcasing the richness of Latinx heritage and fostering a sense of community on campus. “Seeing so many people come together to celebrate our culture was incredibly rewarding.” said Sanchez-Vasquez. “It reinforced why I took on this role–to create opportunities and spaces where Latinx students feel valued and empowered.”

Beyond campus, Sanchez-Vasquez led his chapter’s participation in the ALPFA National Convention in Las Vegas, where members accessed career-changing networking opportunities. He also leveraged his internship at Accenture to connect ALPFA members with industry leaders, opening doors to mentorships and internships.

Sanchez-Vasquez credits his experience with equipping him with invaluable skills in project management, event coordination, and professional communication. “Planning large-scale events like Fiesta Latina taught me how to oversee logistics, secure funding, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders,” he explained. “It prepared me for the challenges of high-level professional roles and fueled my passion for leadership and entrepreneurship.”

During his time with ALPFA, he also drew inspiration from mentors like Nellie Borrero, a Senior Executive at Accenture and a renowned advocate for inclusion and diversity. Meeting her at the national convention was a pivotal moment. “Her advice to lead with authenticity and purpose has become a cornerstone of how I approach leadership,” said Sanchez-Vasquez. “She showed me the power of purpose-driven leadership and inspired me to create lasting impact with my community.

“Take the leap and embrace the unknown”

Now preparing for his next chapter as a management consultant at Accenture and an aspiring entrepreneur, Sanchez-Vasquez reflects on how ALPFA shaped his academic and professional journey. “Leading ALPFA showed me that leadership isn’t just about managing tasks–it’s about inspiring others, building communities, and creating opportunities for the next generation,” he said.

His advice for students considering similar high-impact experiences? “Take the leap and embrace the unknown. True growth happens outside your comfort zone. Leadership is about turning vision into action and creating a legacy of impact.”

Sanchez-Vasquez’s story is a testament to the transformative power of high-impact experiences. Through his leadership, ALPFA at NC State has become a cornerstone of empowerment for Latinx students, a legacy that will continue to inspire long after his graduation.
