John W. Pope Lecture presents Legal Scholar Randy E. Barnett

March 20, 2017 | 11:30 pm - March 21, 2017 | 12:45 am

The annual John W. Pope Lecture Series presents Randy E. Barnett, one of the nation’s leading constitutional scholars, who will be discussing his latest book, “Our Republican Constitution: Securing the Liberty and Sovereignty of We the People,” published in 2016.

In this book, Barnett provides a concise history of the long struggle between two fundamentally opposing constitutional traditions, based on two competing notions of the meaning of the opening words of the U.S. Constitution of the United States: “We the People.”

A reception with the speaker will follow the presentation.
About the speaker

Randy Barnett is the Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Legal Theory at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he teaches constitutional law and contracts, and is director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution. In 2004, he argued the medical marijuana case of Gonzalez v. Raich before the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2012, he was one of the lawyers representing the National Federation of Independent Business in its constitutional challenge to the Affordable Care Act.
After graduating from Northwestern University and Harvard Law School, he prosecuted many cases in the Cook County States’ Attorney’s Office in Chicago. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Constitutional Studies, Barnett has been a visiting professor at Pennsylvania State University, Northwestern and Harvard Law School. He has published 12 books, more than one hundred articles and reviews, as well as numerous op-eds.
