Why did you choose the NC State Jenkins MBA program for your graduate education? I think it was a combination of several factors. First, I already knew NC State. As part of my tenure as Assistant Professor at UCAB, my university in my home country, Venezuela, I was the coordinator of a summer program between my university and NC State CCEE Department, so I came to Raleigh every summer since 2012, and I was impressed by the university. Second, I love the city and what it has to offer to people with family and small children like me. Finally, the small class setting and the industry focus of the program.

How did your experience in the program contribute to your professional achievements and successes? It has been a game changer! I’m kind of transitioning from a career in the engineering and construction industry to an advisory role. So, being able to learn so many new things for me and had the exposure to cutting edge approaches and techniques (i.e analytics), has been incredible and put me in another level. Now, I feel that I have a more complete tool-kit to go back to the industry and be able to make a difference.

What are a few of the most impactful classes/lessons you have learned during your time at NC State? My strategy class with Dr. Bamford was mind-blowing. What a great class! I’m using my notes from his class in almost everything I do. Also, the finance introductory class with Dr. Mitchel. After the first few classes, I decided to change my concentration to Financial Management. Dr. Seb’s class in Analytical Supply Chain has been great (and fun) too!

What advice would you give for prospective and current students who are interested in your industry/profession? Make sure to balance your classes. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try different classes. It will expand your knowledge and will help you to build a stronger profile. This is extremely valuable since it will help you in any industry or role. In my case, all my previous professional experience was in engineering and construction, and I interned last summer in a company specializing in Healthcare… and I love it. Jenkins will provide you all you need to be successful.
