Staff Spotlight: Derek Welsh
Derek Welsh is the student services/administrative support specialist with the department of accounting and the masters of accounting program. Welsh has been with the Poole College of Management for nine years after being referred to the college by a friend.
As the student services/administrative support specialist, Welsh is responsible for admissions and student services within the college, as well as maintain the college’s print shop and Mediasite Lecture Capture rooms. The Pennsylvania native has two associate’s degrees, one is in computer and information science and support services from Penn State University and the other is in computer animation and graphic design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
Work at Poole College
What have you enjoyed most about your experience at Poole College?
I love being surrounded by intellectuals. I truly feel like I’m contributing to a greater good working here and not just existing as another cog in a corporate money-making machine.
What advice would you give a staff member who has recently joined Poole College?
Research and utilize EVERY perk that you get working for the university. There are many advantages to working at NC State and Poole College.

What project that you completed at Poole you are most proud of?
I contribute to a masters program with very high job placements at prestigious firms that also boasts these accolades.
What do you believe is your most interesting accomplishment as a staff member?
I have become the PCOM Lecture Capture room scheduler/trainer and I encourage you to come to see me if you want to record something for your classes!
Life Outside of Poole
When you are not at Poole College, what do you enjoy doing for fun?
I enjoy listening to podcasts during a long walk, reading, drawing/digital art, and playing video games. I have a two-year-old boy and we recently had our second, a girl. ALL of my time seems to be focused on child-rearing currently, which has its own glorious highs and exhausting lows.
