Staff Spotlight: Julie Lawson
Julie Lawson is the director of advising in the Office of Undergraduate Programs and has been with the Poole College of Management for seven years. Lawson is from Norfolk, Virginia, and received a master’s degree in college student development from Appalachian State University.
As the director of advising, Lawson is responsible for leading the advising unit, representing the college on campus-wide committees, advising students and teaching the M100 course. She is a current member of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and has received the NC State University Award for Excellence for Poole College of Management and the Barbara Solomon Advising Award.
Work at Poole College
Why did you decide to join Poole College?
I started working in the Poole College of Management when an academic advising position came open. I worked as an advisor until the fall of 2017, when I had the opportunity to take on a leadership role within our advising team.
What have you enjoyed most about your experience at Poole College?
I love the people in Poole. I work with an amazing team where we have the right people serving in positions where they are most passionate. Our team is student-centered and committed to making the Poole experience positive for all of our students.
What do you see as the greatest strengths of Poole College?
The fact that our faculty and staff are committed to creating an educational environment that helps our students grow and thrive while at NC State. We provide a strong foundation for students that leads them on a successful journey while in college.
What advice would you give a staff member who has recently joined Poole College?
The work environment in Poole is excellent. Meet as many faculty and staff as possible so that you can begin to build your community.
Professional Accomplishments
What project that you completed at Poole you are most proud of?
I am really proud of the innovative way that we advise students — we continue to find new ways of reaching students with important information. The number of students we serve continues to increase, but our advisors remain eager to create relationships with as many students as possible.
Life Outside of Poole
When you are not at Poole College, what do you enjoy doing for fun?
Spending time at home with family.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment outside of work?
My strong relationships with friends and family members.
