From Dream to Reality: Meet Poole Student Selected as NC State Commencement Speaker
Business administration major Elyza Tran will deliver remarks to her fellow graduates at the university's ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Every graduating class has standout students whose journeys inspire and energize the campus community. This year, one student from the Poole College of Management will deliver the student commencement address at NC State University’s graduation ceremony. A business administration major with a concentration in information technology and a minor in english, Elyza Tran has pursued a path defined by a mix of ambition, adaptability and an enduring commitment to growth.
NC State has always been close to Tran’s heart — both of her parents are proud alumni, with degrees in computer science and textile engineering. “Their experiences at NC State inspired me to see it as a place where I could grow and achieve my goals,” says Tran.
But the journey to Poole began in high school, where a business class changed everything. Encouraged by a teacher who recognized her potential, Tran discovered that her natural talents — problem-solving, leadership, and communication — aligned perfectly with a career in business.
“This has always been a dream of mine. It’s even on my bucket list: ‘Things I Want to Do Before I Turn 30.’”
While many moments have defined her time at NC State, serving as the university commencement speaker tops the list for Tran.
“This has always been a dream of mine,” she says. “It’s even on my bucket list: ‘Things I Want to Do Before I Turn 30.’ All the hard work I’ve put into public speaking, coupled with years of experience in speech and debate, has led me to this incredible milestone.”
The announcement was a moment of joy and gratitude, especially for her family. “My speech is all about them and the sacrifices they’ve made to help me get to this point. This accomplishment is just as much theirs as it is mine.”
Adapting to change was another key theme during Tran’s NC State journey. While she originally intended to focus on marketing, the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and an inspiring course with Professor Sarah Khan led her to switch concentrations to information technology. “That experience taught me the value of stepping out of my comfort zone.”
Balancing technical skills with creativity, Tran also pursued a minor in English.
“Writing and storytelling have always been passions of mine,” she says. “Adding English allowed me to combine technical expertise with creative expression, which I believe makes me a more effective communicator and problem-solver.”
A dedicated student leader, Tran served as vice president of inclusion for Pi Beta Phi, vice president of administration and finance for Order of Omega, and a Poole Student Ambassador. These positions taught her valuable lessons in empathy, teamwork and the importance of listening — skills that will undoubtedly serve her well in her future career as a wealth management consultant at Deloitte.
The path doesn’t end at Deloitte. Within 10 years, Tran envisions herself as an attorney specializing in tech law, focusing on areas like artificial intelligence and copyright law. “Technology evolves rapidly, and I want to help shape policies and laws that define the future, ensuring advancements are ethical and equitable.”
Tran also aims to inspire the next generation, particularly young girls in technology.
“Fostering diversity and inclusion in tech is something I’m deeply passionate about. It’s not just about representation — it’s about creating innovative solutions that benefit everyone.”
As she prepares to leave NC State, staying connected is a priority for Tran. Through alumni events, mentorship and community involvement, she hopes to give back to the university that shaped her. “I’d love to mentor Poole students interested in law, technology, or business, guiding them as others have guided me.”
“Embrace every opportunity. Step out of your comfort zone. Take classes that challenge you. Get involved in organizations early. And don’t forget to take care of yourself — balance is key.”
To incoming students, Tran offers this wisdom:
“Embrace every opportunity. Step out of your comfort zone. Take classes that challenge you. Get involved in organizations early. And don’t forget to take care of yourself — balance is key.”
As she prepares to take the stage and share her story, Tran’s journey stands out as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance, adaptability and a commitment to excellence. Poole College is proud to celebrate her achievements and looks forward to the impact she will continue to make in the world.
