Staff Spotlight: Adam Tompkins

Adam Tompkins is a marketing and communications manager with the Poole College and has been with the college since November 2018. Tompkins manages marketing and communications efforts for the Executive Education and the Supply Chain Resource Cooperative teams, with an emphasis on content development. 

The Poole College alum earned a bachelor of science in business administration with a concentration in marketing in 2013.

Work at Poole College

Why did you decide to join Poole College?

I’m a Poole College alum, so I have a strong affinity for the school. I can’t think of a better place to work than the institution that made my career possible in the first place.

What is the most common question you receive at work? 

“Where is your office?” Across the street from Nelson Hall at 2806 Hillsborough Street, 2nd floor. (Next to the convenience store.)

What have you enjoyed most about your experience at Poole College?

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to speak with students and hearing about the amazing and innovative things they’re doing, both inside and outside of the classroom.

What do you see as the greatest strengths of Poole College?

The college does a fantastic job of preparing students for the workforce by providing them with opportunities to engage with industry through practicum projects, guest speakers, networking events and more.

What advice would you give a staff member who has recently joined Poole College?

Get to know as many people around the college as you can. There are a ton of people here — staff, faculty, and even students — who have a wealth of knowledge and insights about the college, university and all sorts of things that can help you succeed.

Professional Accomplishments

What project that you completed at Poole you are most proud of? 

I am most proud of helping the Executive Education team launch their first-ever digital marketing campaign, which was organized to promote our Women in Technical Leadership open-enrollment program. Not only was it instrumental in generating leads and increasing awareness of the program and NC State Executive Education as a whole, but it will also serve as a framework for several more campaigns we plan to run in the future as we continue to develop and market more open programs. 

Life Outside of Poole College

Where were you born and what countries/state/cities did you live in?

I was born in Clemson, South Carolina, where I lived for two years and then moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. I moved to Raleigh to go to school at NC State and have lived here ever since.

When you are not at Poole College, what do you enjoy doing for fun? 

I enjoy writing and playing music on the guitar, reading and writing, watching movies, traveling, and spending time with my fiancé, Ellen.

What do you consider as your greatest accomplishment outside of work?

I’ve started writing a novel, which is currently a work-in-progress. A lot of people say they’d like to write a book one day but never do, so I still consider starting it a major accomplishment!
