A small provision in President Trump’s recently signed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” could significantly increase the tax burden on professional sports bettors. The change may require them to pay income tax even in years when they have net losses, impacting so-called “sharps” who gamble as a full-time career.
“It’s going to be disastrous for them,” Nathan Goldman, Poole professor, told The Athletic. “It’s going to devastate the Nevada economy. The professional gamblers bring a lot to that economy.”
