Northgate Mall Might Be the First of Many Closing in the Triangle

Durham’s Northgate Mall announced it will close its doors for good following financial struggles made worse during the COVID-19 pandemic. Steve Allen, associate dean of graduate programs and professor of economics, believes that Northgate Mall could be the first of many mall closures in the coming years.

“COVID-19 is making their situation worse,” said Allen. “Look at this from the perspective of the owners of the property. People are afraid. Even if Gov. Cooper today all the stores can open go out and shop, I don’t think he’s going to see many takers.”
