The Trump Administration resumed collection efforts on defaulted student loans after a roughly five-year hiatus. Christina Lewellen, Poole professor of accounting, explained on WRAL what it means now that the federal government will again begin collecting defaulted student debt loan payments.
“”So I would I would definitely say for those if you are in default or if you if you haven’t made payments in a series or every time, the best thing that you can do is be proactive right now,” she said. “Go to the Office of Federal Student Aid and and try to contact them, reach out proactively and see if there’s some way that you can negotiate with them before they come after you and and try to to get the money back.”
