Academic Standing and Retention of Funding
Financial awards are made on a merit basis and students receiving financial support are expected to carry a full academic load and to maintain a superior record.
Normally, financial support commitments are made for no more than one year but are renewable. Academic performance and progress toward the degree is the basis for renewal of such support together with the effectiveness with which assigned service obligations have been fulfilled. A half-time assistantship normally calls for a service obligation of 20 hours per week. Students with grade point averages (GPA’s) below 3.00 are not eligible for graduate assistantships. Such GPAs, along with other instances of poor academic performance and failure to progress, are grounds for premature termination of a student’s assistantship or fellowship. During the term of their appointments, graduate assistants and fellows are not permitted to take additional employment on or off campus without prior consent of the graduate administrator.
