Residency

Students who are US citizens or permanent residents and have lived in North Carolina for at least 12 months with the intent to become legal residents of the state are strongly encouraged to apply for North Carolina residency.

Applications and all supporting documentation must be submitted no later than the 10th business day of the term for which the student is seeking residency reclassification. See more information about North Carolina residency.

Students seeking to establish North Carolina residency should begin taking the necessary steps as soon as possible. While the following actions alone will not insure that in-state residency is granted, they are given consideration when the application is reviewed. These actions are:

  1. Register to vote
  2. Vote
  3. Acquire a North Carolina driver’s license
  4. List personal property for taxation
  5. File North Carolina income tax return
  6. Register motor vehicle
  7. Convert banking, club/organization membership, to NC
