Is Recession on the Horizon? Ayse Dur Offers a History of Economic Downturns

Ayse Dur, assistant professor of economics at Poole College, weighs in on the history of recessions in the U.S. and the current threat of downturn facing our economy.

Many forecasters expect the country to experience economic stress in the second half of 2023. What causes recessions? Are they predictable? Dur said, “By looking at the data, we can say that there was about one recession per decade since the 1980s. All were led by different factors and had different consequences.”

Dur further noted, however, that recent recessions in the U.S. have been generally difficult to anticipate. “It is hard to tell how frequently recessions occur or to predict if a recession will happen soon.”
