Applying to a graduate degree program is a big decision, and we anticipate you have many questions. We have compiled some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) on this page. We hope they provide you with the answers you seek.

Applying

Do I apply to NC State or to IAE?

Residents of the United States of America, and countries in North and South America and the Caribbean apply to the MGIM program through NC State University. Residents of all other countries apply through the IAE website.

In what order should I submit my MGIM application materials?
You may submit your application materials to NC State in any order. However, you will not be able to view what application materials have been received until you submit your online application by submitting your online application through The Graduate School at NC State University.

A complete application for NC State consist of the following:

  • Online Application Form
  • North Carolina Residency Form If you wish to claim North Carolina residency for tuition purposes.
  • Application Fee $75 for U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents / $85 USD for non-resident aliens and international student applicants (NONREFUNDABLE; no application fee waivers)
  • Personal Statement
  • Official transcripts from each college/university attended(It is not necessary to request NC State transcripts) International students whose undergraduate transcripts are in a language other than English are required to provide an official English translation through World Education Services. General information about being an international student at NC State University is available at the Office of International Affairs website.
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation Recommendations can be submitted online through the Apply Yourself Graduate School application system, or filled out by your recommender and sent directly to the MGIM Program Office
  • Resume Submit your resume by uploading it through the Apply Yourself application system.
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (international applicants only).International applicants who did not complete their undergraduate work in the United States are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS. Citizens of approved countries are exempt.  International students who have completed one full year of full-time study in the United States or other approved countries are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Are interviews required for admission?
Yes, someone from the MGIM admissions committee will contact qualified applicants to set up an interview once the online application has been submitted.

Do I need to take the GMAT or the GRE?
We do not require a GRE or GMAT score to be submitted for this program.

Who has to take the TOEFL or IELTS?
Citizens of approved countries where English is an official language and the language of instruction in higher education are exempt from the TOEFL and IELTS. International students who have completed one full year of full-time study in the United States or other approved countries are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. All other international applicants must meet the TOEFL or IELTS minimum score for admission. TOEFL or IELTS test date must be no older than two years (24 months) prior to the beginning of the requested entry term.

What is the minimum TOEFL score for graduate admission?
The Internet Based Test (IBT) is gradually replacing other versions of the TOEFL. The minimum IBTTOEFL score for admission is 80. The minimum IBT scores for each section are:

Listening – 18 points
Reading – 18 points
Writing – 18 points
Speaking – 18 points

The Computer Based TOEFL score must total  at least 213 (with at least 17 on three sections and no section score below 13). The Paper Based TOEFL requires a score of at least 550 (with scores of 50 on at least two of the three sections and no section score below 45).

How do I report my TOEFL score?
You can visit the Education Testing Service (ETS) at http://www.ets.org and submit a request to have your TOEFL score report sent to NCSU. The institutional code number for North Carolina State University is 5496. There is no need to provide a departmental code on the request form. ETS will report the scores to NCSU electronically. During peak application periods, it may take up to four weeks for ETS to report your score and the Graduate School to attach your score report to your submitted application, even if you make the request long before you submit your application.

What is the minimum IELTS score for graduate admission?
The minimum overall band score must be at least 6.5. Minimum test scores for each section are listed below:

Listening – 6.5
Reading – 6.5
Writing – 6.5
Speaking – 6.5

Admission Decisions

Will you notify me if something is missing from my application?
It is your responsibility to complete the MGIM application, send in supporting documents, and submit your application. We will acknowledge receipt of your application and will make an effort to contact you if your application is incomplete. If you prefer immediate verification that your application pieces have been received, we suggest that you use either the tracking number or return receipt service provided by the shipper. Once you submit your online application, you may also log in to the application page and view the items that have been received by the Graduate School.

How will I receive an admission decision?
You’ll receive an official email from the Graduate School informing you that a decision has been made and instructing you to log into your application to view the decision of admission or denial. (Please note: we do not give admission decisions over the telephone.)

May I reapply if I am denied admission?
All admissions decisions are final for the year in which they are made. If you are denied admission, you may reapply the following year. The MGIM Office holds all applications materials for one year, so you will not need to resubmit transcripts or GMAT scores unless your scores or transcripts have changed.

Housing

Where can I find a place to live?
Students will spend their first semester at Aix-Marseille Graduate School of Management – IAE in Aix-en-Provence and the spring semester at NC State University in Raleigh, NC. Below are links to housing options at each location.

Though not exhaustive, this will be a good starting point for students seeking apartments close to campus.

Am I required to speak French?
No, all instruction is in English. Admitted students will be given information about optional French language courses to assist with basic communication.

Are there any steps I should take to connect with other students prior to the start of the program?
The MGIM Program will work to connect incoming students through in-person meetings and online platforms prior to the start of the program.
