Bio

Mary Newman brings more than 18 years of public accounting and corporate experience into the classroom in her role as an Assistant Professor of Practice in Accounting. She is also the Practicum Coordinator for Poole’s Accounting Nonprofit Practicum, where student teams partner with Triangle nonprofits to support their business and accounting needs.

Prior to joining the Poole faculty full time, Newman spent 14 years at BDO USA. As a strategic advisor to the firm’s Raleigh practice, she led strategy, growth and operations initiatives, generating more than $3 million in new business. She designed signature training programs for client service professionals across eight BDO offices in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. Newman also led teams of tax professionals serving mainly corporate and flow-through clients.

Newman serves on the national advisory board for the YMCA’s Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer and on the executive committee of Strategic Women in Funds – Triangle. She has also built financial literacy programming for NC State student-athletes, University Theatre students and local employers.

Newman is a licensed CPA in North Carolina. She holds a Master of Accounting from NC State’s Poole College of Management and a B.S. in Commerce from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce.
