Update to the Foreign Language Requirement for Poole Majors
Overview
Effective summer 2022, Poole will introduce new curricula for the Business Administration, Accounting, and Economics (BA only) degrees that no longer require students to complete the 201 level (third semester level) of a foreign language. There will be no change to the language requirement for the BS in Economics.
The new curricula will require that students achieve the equivalent of the university GEP proficiency in a language – more specifics about that proficiency level can be found here. The three credits that were formerly required as the 201-level of a language will be replaced with three additional credits of free electives.
The deadline to move to a new curriculum has been extended to September 6.
Why was the change made?
No significant curriculum change is taken lightly and the Poole faculty have given a great deal of thought to this change. There are four primary reasons why we decided to update our curriculum and adjust the foreign language requirement.
- This change puts us in line with other business schools across the country and other B.S. degrees at NC State. Being “like” others isn’t necessarily a reason for change by itself, we pride ourselves on excellence and doing more than what’s “average” but recognizing that we were an outlier indicated we should at least consider whether there were justifiable reasons. The next three reasons below changed that calculation…
- This change will impact student success – we are not trying to make our degrees easier but we are always conscious of ways we can remove barriers to student success and graduation. We are aware that the 201 level of language was a significant barrier and challenge to many students and adjusting this requirement will open up a more achievable path to graduation.
- This change provides additional flexibility for students – it adds 3 more credits of free electives and potentially reduces or removes the need to take any foreign language courses. This is a short-term impact as our hope is to move towards what is outlined in the final reason below.
- This change gives us the opportunity to better focus on achieving our goals with our curriculum. We are committed to graduating culturally competent, globally-aware students. Requiring that students complete a third semester foreign language or the equivalent was in part an attempt to achieve this. But after careful consideration, we believe there can be a better way to educate students in these things. Adjusting the foreign language requirement will give us the opportunity to better explore how we can achieve our educational goals through a replacement for the 3-credit foreign language requirement.
These new requirements will only be introduced automatically for new students starting in the Business Administration, Accounting, and Economics (BA) majors in summer 2022 or after. Current students in those majors will not see a change in their degree requirements and don’t need to do anything if they are on track to complete their current degree.
If you are currently in a Business Administration, Accounting, or Economics (BA) degree program and are interested in exploring whether the curriculum change may be beneficial to you and/or finding out how you can move into this new curriculum, please read the information pertinent to your situation and any FAQs that are helpful.
IMPORTANT! There may be consequences to changing into the new curriculum that only requires language proficiency. Before you request any change (see specifics below), please make sure to read the important information below carefully and reach out to the Poole Advising Team if you have any questions or concerns.
General Information
If you are currently on track to graduate Spring 2022
There is nothing you need to do. The new curriculum will not be in place until the summer so you should complete your degree requirements as planned and graduate this May.
If you are currently in Management First Year (MGMTFY) and have not yet declared your Poole major
You can declare your major at any point and you will automatically be moved into the new curriculum in your major that only requires language proficiency.
If you are currently not in a Poole major
If you are planning to change majors into or add a Poole major in a future semester (starting Summer 2022) or are planning to transfer into NC State Summer 2022 or after, there is nothing you need to do, you will be admitted into the new curriculum.
If you are currently in the ECONBS major
There is no change to your degree and nothing you need to worry about. Your degree already only requires foreign language proficiency, the same as the new curriculum for the other majors.
If you are currently in the Business Administration, Accounting, or Economics (BA) majors and are graduating after summer 2022
If you are currently in the Business Administration, Accounting, or Economics (BA) majors and are graduating after summer 2022, the situation and your options are not as straightforward. Please read below for FAQs and information that applies to your specific degree. Please note however that the information provided below is only meant to give general guidance and may not cover your specific situation. You should make sure to look at your current degree audit along with a “What If” audit for the new curriculum in your major/concentration and reach out to the Poole Advising Team if you have any questions.
FAQs
Will current students in older curricula be exempted from taking the Intermediate Language (FL_ 201) requirement?
No, students are required to complete all classes in their active curriculum. Students can see these requirements by viewing their official degree audit (please note that “intended” audits are not official).
Can a student in a current curriculum change to the new curriculum that does not require Intermediate Language (FL_201)?
Yes, for students graduating Summer 2022 or after. Students can change their curriculum to the newest curriculum until August 1st by completing the form available at go.ncsu.edu/foreignlanguagechange. Please note that if you move to the newest curriculum you are responsible for all of the requirements for that new curriculum, which may delay your graduation. Please see the Potential Implications section below before making any decisions.
What is the impact on my degree requirements if I change to the new curriculum?
That depends a great deal on your current major and how long you have been at NC State. There are three general places where you will likely see an impact – (1) your major degree requirements, (2) how your language proficiency is satisfied, and (3) your free electives and any non-degree courses. See below for more details on each of these things.
What happens with the 3 hours that were previously assigned to the Intermediate Level of Language (FL_201)?
These hours become free electives. As you know, all Poole degrees require a minimum of 120 credit hours, so we have reassigned these hours to allow for more flexibility for students in the free elective category.
Why was this change made?
See the section towards the top of this page that covers the four primary reasons for the change.
What if I still have questions?
If you still have questions after reading all of the information provided on this page, please reach out to a member of the academic advising team. They are available to serve students in 3 ways: drop-in advising, email, and one-on-one appointments. You can see details on our advising webpage.
Potential Major Requirement Implications for Different Poole Curricula
The section below provides a quick overview of the potential degree requirement changes you might encounter if you decide to move into the new curriculum that only requires foreign language proficiency. Please note that this is only a summary and should not be considered definitive. The best place to review degree requirements is always an audit for the specific degree you are considering.
Current Degree | Potential Changes |
---|---|
BUS Majors (if) | In addition to satisfying language proficiency… |
Neither BUS 351 nor ST 307 are required for your degree… (Look at your degree audit and check the field identified as Req Term – it should have a term earlier than Spring 2017) | There are potentially multiple new courses and requirements you would be required to complete. You should discuss the implications of moving to the new curriculum with a Poole academic advisor before making any change. |

Establishing Proficiency in a Foreign Language
If you change to the new curriculum, you will still need to meet the proficiency requirement for foreign language. To ensure that you won’t still need to take language courses at NC State, you should check to see if you already meet the proficiency requirement. The most typical ways students meet this proficiency are listed below, but there are also other ways. Review the list below or go to the NC State language proficiency website to learn more.
Common Ways to Establish Language Proficiency:
- You completed at least two years of the same foreign language in high school and earned at least a C (77 or above) in those classes
- You passed level 102 or above (or the equivalent) in a foreign language course at NC State or another community college, college or university.
- You have native proficiency in another language
- You took the NC State language placement test and tested at the 201 level or above (see more information on here)
You can check your degree audit to see if you have proficiency or native fluency already noted by looking at the bottom of the audit in the non-degree section. If it doesn’t have either of those listed or you haven’t already passed the second level of a language at NC State or elsewhere, you should talk with a Poole academic advisor about your situation.
Potential Impact on Free Electives and Non-Degree Courses
The new foreign language proficiency requirement does not have a specific number of credits associated with it, while the previously 201-level requirement had three credits required. These three credits in the new curriculum are added to your free electives.
If you don’t have additional credits that are falling into non-degree on your degree audit, you may need to take an additional three credits of foreign language if you change to the new curriculum. If you do you have classes that are under the non-degree section of your degree audit you should check to make sure they will count for free electives by clicking on the “details” button next to the free elective section of your degree audit, if the course you are wondering about is on that list, it will not count!
If you do have additional courses under the non-degree section of your degree audit (at least three credits) and they are allowed to count as free electives, you will not need to take an additional course in the new curriculum.
