Professor Natalie Young brings enthusiasm, adaptability, and a student-centered approach to Poole Global’s Summer 1 program in Germany. Having never traveled outside the U.S. before, she was inspired to lead a study abroad program as a way to experience German culture firsthand while combining her love of teaching with the adventure of immersion in a new environment. For her, study abroad is not just about academics, it’s about building resilience, independence, and cultural awareness in students while sharing the journey together.
International Experiences
- 2026 Summer 1: Managerial Accounting – Germany (Faculty-led)
What inspired you to lead a study abroad program?
Prior to teaching my first Summer 1 Program, I had never traveled outside the USA and I wanted to experience German culture firsthand. Leading a study abroad program was the perfect way to combine travel with teaching, while immersing myself in a new culture.
Why do you enjoy teaching abroad with students?
I wanted to experience a different culture alongside students and observe how they learn in a new environment. Teaching abroad also gives me fresh ideas to bring back to my lectures and improves my own understanding of how students adapt to new learning situations.
What are you most excited about for the upcoming program?
I am most excited to visit more castles and spend time with new friends I made while leading this program in Germany this past summer.
What can students expect to learn from this experience?
Students will learn a lot about themselves, their resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. They’ll navigate public transportation, communicate across language barriers, and manage daily life without some of the comforts they’re used to. These experiences teach independence, cultural awareness, and confidence.
Any favorite local experiences or recommendations for students?
Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle is a must, as is experiencing the local beer gardens. For something truly unique, try spaghetti gelato, it’s a fun and memorable culinary experience.
What advice would you give to students preparing to study abroad?
Expect that hiccups will happen: getting lost, experiencing travel delays, or feeling homesick. Bring a picture of your family to feel connected and use the opportunity to strengthen your time management and adaptability skills. Enjoy the travel and cultural experiences but remember that you are also taking college courses that will require focus and dedication. Balancing both will make your experience both rewarding and successful.
How does international experience enhance a student’s business education or career prospects?
Studying abroad develops global awareness, cross-cultural communication skills, and adaptability. Which are all qualities highly valued in today’s business world. Experiencing different business environments firsthand gives students a competitive edge and a broader perspective for their careers.
How is your course different when taught abroad?
Managerial Accounting is normally a 16-week course taught in the Fall and Spring semesters, During the summer, the course is offered in a 5-week format. Abroad, students complete the same content in just 3 weeks. The pace is intense, but the immersive environment allows students to immediately apply concepts and collaborate closely with peers. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to visit local businesses, giving them a chance to see firsthand how the concepts they are learning are applied in real-world settings.
Why You Should Go!
Take full advantage of the experience! Immerse yourself in the culture, try new things, and connect with your classmates. These moments often become some of the most memorable and transformative experiences of your education.
