Bio
Dr. Jon C. Carr is the Jenkins Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Department of Management, Innovation & Entrepreneurship at North Carolina State University. He previously served on the faculties of Texas Christian University and the University of Southern Mississippi. He received his Ph.D. from Mississippi State University.
Dr. Carr’s research is focused on three general domains within the field of management – entrepreneurship, family business, and organizational behavior – and the interface between these general areas. His research has been published in several of the field’s most important journals, to include the Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of Applied Psychology, and the Journal of Management. His research on the concept of “Familiness” in family businesses, published with Allison Pearson and John Shaw, received an Emerald Citation of Excellence as one of the top fifty articles published in management, business, and economics over a five year span.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Carr has obtained several million dollars of external funding as a principle investigator, to include funding from NASA and the U.S. Department of Labor, and has served as a funded team partner with organizations such as Lockheed-Martin’s Earth Observation and Exploration Division. These funding activities have centered mainly on strategic planning, technology transfer, commercialization, and business model assessment and innovation.
Dr. Carr has been active in his professional domain of entrepreneurship and family business, serving as a reviewer and special issue editor for numerous journals in these areas, to include the Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. In 2020, he was elected to the 5-year leadership track for the Entrepreneurship Division within the Academy of Management. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Family Business Review, with a focus on psychological topics as they relate to family businesses. He has won several awards for teaching, research, and service in his respective domain areas.
Jon has experience as both an entrepreneur and business investor, with most of his experience in health care and e-commerce industry spaces. As a consultant, Jon has worked with numerous for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. His primary roles as a consultant have centered on business models, innovation and technology management, leadership selection, and strategic planning. Finally, he has served as a speaker on entrepreneurship, innovation, and family business topics for a variety of public and private organizations.
