I’m not a Poole College of Management major or minor. Can I still apply?

Yes! NC State students, who are not a major or minor in the Poole College of Management, are able to apply for a Poole summer study abroad program. All students applying to the program must meet the course pre-requisites as listed by the start of the program. For students who are considering a business administration or business entrepreneurship minor, a Poole summer study abroad program is a great way to complete between 6 and 9 credits toward the minor. For students who are looking to CODA into Poole, these programs are a way to take additional Poole courses before applying through the CODA process.

All students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible to apply for a Poole College of Management summer study abroad program. In addition, students must be in good academic and student conduct standing. Please see individual summer programs for specific requirements regarding course pre-requisites.

There is not a language requirement for any of the summer study abroad programs offered through Poole as all classes are taught in English by NC State faculty.

For the Spring Break Program (International Business Strategy in Paris), the application deadline is October 15, 2023.

The early action deadline for summer programs is November 29, 2023. Applications completed by this date will have priority acceptance into the program. the Final application deadline is February 7, 2024. 

The Global Programs team does expected most of the programs to fill to capacity so students are encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible.

Program costs include a non-refundable commitment fee due after admission into the program ($1,000), tuition for all included courses, accommodations, in-country excursions and some meals. The Study Abroad Office Administration Fee, airfare, passport/visa fees, textbooks and personal expenses (i.e. personal travel, souvenirs) are not included. Scholarships are available for summer study abroad program participants. Students must complete a separate application through PackAbroad to be considered for NC State scholarships. The scholarship application deadline is November 15, 2023 and students will be notified in February 2023. Many of the summer study abroad programs for the Poole College of Management have pre-requisite courses. You can review the pre-requisites for a specific program by visiting that program’s page and scrolling to the “Pre-requisite” section. Students must successfully complete all pre-requisite courses before the start of the program. If you are taking the pre-requisites for a program in Spring 2023 and do not pass the pre-requisite courses, your participation in the study abroad program may be jeopardized and you would be held financially responsible if you are no longer able to participate.

Please note that students are able to apply for a summer study abroad program before completing the pre-requisite course as long as they enroll in it and pass the course before the start of the study abroad program.

M 380: Doing Business in [Country] is a 3 credit hour course offered on each of the Poole Global Summer Study Abroad programs. For all NC State students, M 380 fulfills 3 credits of the interdisciplinary perspectives (IDP) degree requirement or can be used as a free elective. For business administration minors, M 380 counts as a minor elective. M 380 is an experiential course that combines in-class learning with out-of-classroom experiences to learn how business is done from multiple perspectives. Corporate visits, guest lectures, and cultural events all make up components of the M 380 course.

No. To be eligible for any summer program offered through Poole, students must not have taken any of the courses taught on the program. Students must take all courses as part of the program. The courses advertised on the website are the only courses offered on the program and students are not able to mix and match courses.

Poole Global does not recommend that students work remotely or take an online course while studying abroad. Students should not expect to have time on the program to take on additional responsibilities in the States. Students should expect to be fully immersed in the study abroad experience.

Students are responsible for booking and purchasing their own flight to and from the program. The Global Programs staff will provide the flight details and itinerary of the program faculty director to the students. All students are strongly encouraged to book the same flight as the professor. Students should not book a flight for the program until they receive specific instructions from the Global Programs staff.

All students MUST have a valid passport to go on the study abroad programs. The passport should be valid 6 months beyond the end of the program. For example, if a program ends on June 20, 2024, the students passport should be valid until as least December 2024. If you do not have a valid passport, you are HIGHLY encouraged to begin the process of getting one early as it normally takes a minimum of two months to receive it.

All United States passport holders participating on the summer study abroad programs to Europe do not need a visa unless they plan on traveling after the program concludes.

Students are able to travel on their own during the program when no classes, corporate visits, cultural events, or in-country excursions are scheduled. Friends and family are not able to visit student participants during the program as the students will be busy the majority of each day with required program activities. Absences from classes AND other program events will not be excused. Students are encouraged to stay after the program concludes to travel on their own or with friends and family. All students planning to travel before, during or after the program must submit their travel itinerary to Global Programs.

Should a program cancellation become necessary for health and safety reasons prior to student departure, every effort will be made to refund recoverable costs to participants. In accordance with the Study Abroad Restricted Travel Policy, international travel is not restricted due to COVID-19.

NC State Study Abroad regularly monitors the U.S. Department of State (DOS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) international travel advisories, the World Health Organization (WHO),  and reports from the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC). Study Abroad also consults with embassies, consulates, and our overseas partner institutions.

NC State does not require students to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to participate in a study abroad program. That being said, if a host institution, host country or any vendor of the program requires students to be vaccinated before studying abroad, students who are not yet vaccinated will be required to get vaccinated before departure from the USA. Those not in compliance with the vaccination requirements will still be financially liable to the program as outlined by our refund and cancelation policy above. NC State strongly advises students to get vaccinated as soon in order to avoid any potential disruptions to their study abroad experience.
