Additional Details
Overview
The new Accounting curriculum – effective for the Spring 2021 semester, fully integrates analytics into the Accounting major for all students and removes the concentrations that were previously available for students to select and pursue. The core Accounting courses required for the degree remain the same (see below for full details), but the 9 credits that were previously allotted to concentrations are now replaced with 6 credits of analytics-focused coursework and 3 credits of an Accounting elective.
Analytics Focus & CPA Prep
The new curriculum provides all accounting students with additional preparation in business analytics. Analytics is all about using data to drive business decisions and has applications across all business and industry functions. This new structure will better prepare students for the job market and will more easily allow them to sit for the CPA exam with the required 30 hours of accounting and business law coursework.
Career Implications
CPA firms along with private and public companies are seeking to hire more students with business analytics backgrounds today than colleges and universities are currently graduating. Regardless of whether you are pursuing a career with a Big-4 professional services firm, a small local CPA firm or in business or industry, an understanding of business analytics tools is a necessity. The new analytics-focused Accounting curriculum will equip all Accounting graduates with the skills and knowledge to be competitive for positions and successful in their careers.
