Business Analytics Honors Program

The Business Analytics Honors Program (BAHP) offers select Poole College undergraduate students additional preparation for careers in the high-demand field of business analytics.

The BAHP combines challenging analytics coursework with a practicum course that engages students with local employers working on real-world business analytics projects. Students who successfully complete the program requirements will have a business analytics honors designation on their university transcript.

Students will complete the Business Analytics Practicum (BUS 459H), which provides a team of students the opportunity to work on a real business challenge, under the guidance of both a faculty advisor and the corporate sponsor’s leadership team.

What is business analytics?

Deloitte defines business analytics as “the practice of using data to drive business strategy and performance. It includes a range of approaches and solutions, from looking backward to evaluate what happened in the past to looking forward to scenario planning and predictive modeling.” It has applications across all businesses and industries – from accounting to supply chain management. This makes it an attractive program for students in all of Poole College’s undergraduate disciplines and degree programs.

CNBC reports that “with more and more companies using big data, the demand for data analytics specialists … is nearing a frenzy.” Companies are seeking to hire way more analysts than colleges and universities are currently graduating. That means “the talent pool is, at best, probably 20 percent of the demand (and) that imbalance is a boon for job seekers,” the CNBC article states. According to McKinsey Global Institute, starting in 2018, there will be a “shortage of 1.5 million managers and analysts who have the ability to understand and make decisions using big data.”

As a Poole College student who successfully completes this program’s requirements, you will receive the business analytics honors designation on your transcript for employers to see, acknowledging that you have received a foundation that prepares you for careers in this continually evolving field.

Students Collaborate with Sustainable Apparel Startup

Two student teams enrolled in BUS 459 Business Analytics Practicum worked with Project DXM to identify business issues and apply business analytics tools and methodologies to solve an organizational challenge.

Curriculum Updates

Please note that the Business Analytics Honors Program has updated the admissions requirements and degree requirements for the program for students who are applying to enter starting in Spring 2020. These changes are a positive result of the increase in analytics-focused courses in Poole, the change in degree requirements that now see all students taking BUS 351 Predictive Analytics for Business as a part of their undergraduate degree, and the continued need for students in the program to develop additional skills in analytics.

You can find more information and specific admissions and program requirements at the links below. There is no change to the admissions or program requirements for students already admitted to the program (those who applied and were admitted prior to Spring 2020).
